Christmas cactus, a jungle cactus named for the time of year it erupts in blooms (Christmas!), is a staple houseplant known for being easy going and thriving on neglect.
Despite the title “cactus”, these plants grow in the mountainous rainforests of Brazil where they get high humidity, lots of rain, and cold temperatures at night.
Water when the plant has been fully dry for up to 2-3 weeks, if the leaves look wrinkly it needs more frequent watering. Provide bright indirect light or gentle sunlight.
To trigger blooming at Christmas, reduce watering in fall and make sure the plant is getting at least 12 hours of darkness. Most crucially, the plant should be exposed to cool temps between 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit. Pressed up against a cold window, moved to a basement window, or moved away from heating vents can help. Depending on your climate, you may be able to put it outside through september and October.
